How Long Should Podcasts Be?

Podcasting is a medium that, while it has been around for years, is finally starting to grow in popularity. Thanks to the explosion of smartphones has allowed this awesome technology to reach millions of people around the world. If you are a business owner, artist, or just someone with something to say, podcasting is for you.

The question that many new podcasters ask is, “How long should my podcast be?” The answer to this question depends on a number of factors. I will try to list them for you in this article, and hopefully they will help you decide what length is right for you.

  • How much time would you spend listening to a podcast on the topic you have chosen. A good way to determine this would be to listen to other podcasts on your topic (chances are good that there is one out there) and determine what length you have the patience to listen to.

  • What time limit can you record consistently. One of the biggest keys to podcasting success is consistency. Your listeners will want to know what they can expect from each episode, including the time frame of each episode. If you are comfortable talking for ten minutes at a time, them make each episode that long. If you can talk for an hour, then go for that. Remember, consistency is the key.
  • How often will you be releasing new episodes? If your plan is to release only one episode each month, you may want to consider a podcast of 30 minutes to an hour in length. Your subscribers are not going to want to wait 30 days for a ten minute episode. They will look elsewhere for the content they want. On the other hand, if you are planning on releasing a new episode on a bi-weekly basis you will want to make them shorter, not only because of their frequency, but also because of the length of time it takes to record and produce a quality podcast.
  • What is the purpose of your podcast? Is it news or entertainment? Is is personal or business? The answer to this question may also help you to decide the length of your podcast.

Hopefully these questions will help you in determining how long your new podcast will be. Don’t be afraid to adjust as you go along. Feedback from your audience is also a great way to know whether you should go longer or shorter. No matter what you decide, make sure you have fun. Unless you do that, you won’t stay with it for very long.
